Field Notes
Keeping board risk packs honest
Traffic-light slides travel faster than the registers beneath them. In board reporting assurance engagements, we pick a handful of metrics and walk them back to source — treasury files, open issue logs, customer complaint counts.
Stale greens are common
A green liquidity indicator that refreshes weekly while the treasury register updates daily will eventually diverge. The fix is often a calendar rule, not a new committee. Calling it out early saves awkward observer questions later.
Narrative overreach
Phrases like “all prior findings closed” deserve a tick against the issue log. Partial closures dressed as full closures are among the most frequent observations we raise. Directors usually prefer an amber with a date to a green that cannot be evidenced.
How to prepare
Send a redacted pack index and identify metric owners before we arrive. Our board reporting assurance page lists typical fees per cycle. The work product is a memo — not a redesigned slide template — unless you commission that separately after findings.
